How Do the Arts Shape Public Policy? | A Conversation with Jamie Bennett
Can the arts help shape public policy, strengthen democracy, and build more connected communities?
We believe the answer is yes, and now you can watch the conversation.
Yesterday, Minnesota Citizens for the Arts and Creative Minnesota welcomed national arts leader Jamie Bennett to the American Swedish Institute for a timely discussion about why the arts matter far beyond the stage or gallery. Together, we explored how artists and cultural organizations help shape public policy, strengthen civic life, and create communities where people feel connected and heard.
During the conversation, we discussed:
- How the arts influence public policy and civic decision-making
- Why creativity is an essential public asset, not just a cultural one
- The role artists play in building trust, fostering dialogue, and bringing communities together
- What communities across the country can learn from Minnesota’s longstanding bipartisan commitment to the arts
Recorded in the heart of South Minneapolis, the conversation also reflects on the important role artists have played during defining moments in our state’s recent history, from helping communities process the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder to contributing to efforts like Operation Metro Surge.
