James Haskins is managing director of the Guthrie Theater and a member of the Senior Management Team. He oversees the administrative facets of the organization, including marketing and communications, finance, human resources, information technology, contract and labor negotiations and facilities. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Theatre Forward and Minnesota Citizens for the Arts.
Haskins joined the Guthrie in 2019 after a 12-year tenure as managing director of Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater in partnership with artistic director Blanka Zizka. He began his career in theater administration at Circle Repertory Company and went on to work with a variety of notable theaters in New York and Seattle. Upon moving to Philadelphia, Haskins first worked as managing director of InterAct Theatre Company and served on the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia board as chair of the Barrymore Awards Oversight Committee. He subsequently became executive director of the Theatre Alliance prior to his work at Wilma Theater. He also served on the Cultural Advisory Committee under former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter.
As a theater artist, Haskins acted in many productions before turning to theater administration. He holds an M.F.A. from the University of Washington and a B.A. from The College of Wooster where he is president of his alumni class.
Haskins is most proud of his directorial and dramaturgical work on the plays of his husband Michael Whistler.< Back
